It was my job to make the astronauts page in our class project. I'm going to tell you a little bit about them. So let's get started!!!
The crew of the space shuttle Columbia consisted of 7 astronauts
-Rick D. Husband, Commander
-William C. McCool, Pilot
-Michael P. Anderson, Payload Commander
-David M. Brown, Mission Specialist 1
-Kalpana Chawla, Mission Specialist 2
-Laurel Blair Salton Clark, Mission Specialist 4
-Ilan Ramon, Payload Specialist 1
-Rick D. Husband, Commander
-William C. McCool, Pilot
-Michael P. Anderson, Payload Commander
-David M. Brown, Mission Specialist 1
-Kalpana Chawla, Mission Specialist 2
-Laurel Blair Salton Clark, Mission Specialist 4
-Ilan Ramon, Payload Specialist 1
Lets start with the commander, Rick D. Husband. Here's some of his personal data. He was born on July 12,1957. He died on Febuary 1,2003 in the Columbia space shuttle explosion. He is survived by his two children. He enjoyed water and snow skiing, cycling, and spending time with his family.
It is now time to learn about his education. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1975. He recived his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University in 1980. He recived his Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from California State University Fresno in 1990. This was a smart dude!
Now lets talk about some organizations he was in and some awards he received. He was involved with the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, Tau Belta Pi,Air Force Association, Texas Tech Ex-Students Association, and he also received many awards. The two awards I feel are very important are the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and the NASA Space Flight Medal.

The two awards I feel are very important are the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and the NASA Space Flight Medal.
Lets talk about the pay load commander Michael P. Anderson. He was born on Christmas Day (December 25) in 1959. He was born in Plattsburgh, New York. Michael is survived by his wife and children. He enjoyed photography, chess, computers, and tennis.
Lets learn about some of his awards. Michael recieved the Congressional Space Medal of Honor after his death. He also received the NASA Space Flight Medal, and last, but not least, the Defense Distinguished Service Medal. And that's just to name a few!
Lets now talk about his school. He graduated from Cheney High School in Cheney, Washington in 1977. Michal received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Washington in 1981. He received his Master of Science Degree from Creighton University in 1990. Another smart guy!
Let's learn about William C. McCool. He was born on September 23,1961. He was born in in San Diego, California. He is survived by his wife and children. William enjoyed running, mountain biking, back country hiking/camping, swimming, playing guitar, and chess.
William graduated from Coronado High School in Lubbock, Texas in 1979. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Science from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1983. William received a Master of Science Degree in computer science from the University of Maryland in 1985. He also received a Master of Aeronautical Engineering from the U.S. Post Graduate School in 1992.
William was involved with one organization as well as winning many awards. The only organization he was involved in was the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association. William won the NASA Space Flight Medal. He also received the Defense Distinguished Service Medal (DDSM).
It is time to learn about another astronaut, Ilan Ramon. He was born on June 20,1954. He was born in Aviv,
Israel. Ilan is survived by his wife, Rana and their four kids. He enjoyed snow skiing and squash (the food).
He graduated from high school in 1972. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Engineering and Electronics from University of Tel Aviv, Israel in 1987.
After his death Ilan received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. He also received the NASA Space Flight Medal as well as the Distinguished Public Service Medal. He also received special honors for fighting in the Yom Kipper War (1977) as well as participating in Operation Peace Galilee (1982). Also in 1992 he was honored for having 1,000 Flight Hours in a F-16 plane.
Laural B. Clark was born in Iowa but considered Rocine, Wisconsin to be her home town. She is survived by her husband and child. She enjoyed scuba diving, hiking, camping, biking, parachuting, and flying, and traveling. She graduated from William Horlick High School in 1979. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1993. She also received a Doctorate in Medicine from the same school.
Some organizations she was involved in were the Aerospace Medical Association, and the Society of U.S. Naval Flight Surgeons. Laural also won many awards. She won the Navy Commendation Medal three times! She also won the National Defense Medal. Her final award is the Overseas Service Ribbon.
David M. Brown was born on April 16, 1956. He is survived by his parents. He enjoyed flying and bicycle riding. Something interesting about David is that he was a four year collegiate varsity gymnast. Also during college he performed in the Circus Kingdom as an acrobat, seven foot unicyclist and stilt walker.
David graduated from York Town High School in Arlington, Virginia, in 1974. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from the College of William and Mary in 1978. David also received a Doctorate in Medicine from Virginia Medical School in 1982. So he was smart and he could ride a unicycle!
David was involved in many organizations. He was the past president of the International Association of Military Flight Surgeon Pilots. He was the Associate Fellow of the Aero Space Medical Association. His final organization was the Society of Naval Flight Surgeon Pilots. He also received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor after his death. David also received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and the NASA Space Flight Medal. His final award was Defense Distinguished Service Medal.
Kalpana Chawla is our final astronaut. She was born in Karnal, India. She is survived by her husband. She enjoyed flying, hiking, back-packing, and reading as well as acrobatics and tail-wind airplanes. She held a Certified Flight Instructor's license for airplane and glider ratings. She also held a Commercial Pilot's licenses for single and multi-engine land and seaplanes and gliders.
She graduated from Togore School in 1976. She also received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Pumjab Engineering College in 1982. Her third degree in Master of Science Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas in 1984. Kalpana's final degree is a Docterate of Philosophy in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Colorado in 1988.
Kalpana won many awards. She won the Congressional Space Medal of Honor after her death. She won the NASA Space Flight Medal. Her final medal is the NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
Most of the astronauts have not alot in common. however one thing they did have did have in common is that they all gave up their lives for space exploration. It is for that we thank them!
